PCOS Treatment in Dallas

PCOS is the most misdiagnosed medical condition in our country.  PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is not just about infertility.

Treatment must address the patients, the myriad of unpleasant symptoms they experience and the root cause of these symptoms. Currently available treatment only addresses the infertility that is very common with PCOS, and is usually handled by fertility specialists. When patients are treated specifically for their symptoms, they are usually given oral contraceptives (birth control pills) and antidepressants. This is almost always inadequate, and leaves patients still feeling miserable, and unfortunately just a little bit better.

8-10% of American women have PCOS in varying degrees of severity. Symptoms can start to appear as early as when a girl has her first menses, and can include very irregular or absent periods, severe PMS, acne, obesity, hirsutism (excess facial and body hair), insomnia, depression, anxiety, fatigue and the development of masculine features. Often, the ovaries form cysts that can cause anovulation (lack of ovulation), thus the name Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

PCOS is not a disease of “cystic ovaries”, as most doctors believe. It is an inherited disorder of Insulin Resistance, and includes elevated levels of DHEA & Testosterone, and the symptoms this causes.

PCOS can be very difficult to diagnose, as most patients do not have all the symptoms. Only 50% of PCOS patients are obese, for example. The condition also goes undiagnosed because women assume that “that is the way they have always been”, and few physicians have the experience or training to recognize it. The issue frequently is compounded when a young woman remains untreated and starts birth control that influences hormones. If lab tests can be performed before hormone treatment (including birth control pills), the evaluation of certain Pituitary hormone levels can confirm the diagnosis. These pituitary hormone levels are no longer helpful for diagnosis if the patient is already taking hormones. Many patients suffer for decades, and see 15-20 different doctors before being properly diagnosed – and then, they are rarely treated properly. Check it out for yourself: Almost all the treatment options are directed at just ovulation and conception. Patients feel good while they are pregnant, and then return to their “misery” after delivery. Why isn’t treatment continued? Because fertility doctors cease treatment after conception, and hormone levels of pregnancy are effective at abating symptoms. After giving birth, hormone levels revert back to previous levels and the awful symptoms return.

Gynecologists and Endocrinologists are specialists who may be new to or completely unfamiliar with the safety and effectiveness of using bioidentical hormones in a way that produces long-term vital longevity, in addition to enhancing the quality of life. Physicians have to make a conscious decision to learn about the benefits of ideal hormone balance and have a desire to incorporate these ground breaking medical solutions into the lives of their patients. Since many medical care providers are unfamiliar and are not taking the time to learn this complicated but extremely beneficial approach to patient care, the proper treatment seems to just be unavailable or extremely rare.

Proper treatment of PCOS includes prescription medications, but must also include bioidentical hormones. Proper treatment results in the return of regular menstrual cycles, control of PMS symptoms, elimination of acne and excess hair, return to “psychological health” (without insomnia, depression and anxiety) and no further need for antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications, dramatic weight loss, more feminine appearance, a return to healthy energy levels and happy patients.

There is an even more important reason to treat PCOS: PCOS patients are 200% to 400% more likely to experience heart attacks and strokes, along with developing the risk for breast cancer and uterine cancer. Thorough, skilled, experienced treatment can eliminate these increase risks!

A personal note from Dr. Albert Hirsch:

I have been a practicing physician for 34 years. For the last 5 years, my practice has focused on areas that traditional American medicine has neglected. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, Non Surgical Weight Loss and Longevity have been my specialties, and now account for 90% of my practice. I have many patients who have lost over 100 pounds, and hundreds who have lost 40-50 pounds or more. I have many menopausal female patients who have returned to their premenopausal youthful feelings and function. I have many female and male patients who not only lose weight, but have increased energy and a return of their youthful libidos and sexual functioning. This is, and continues to be, extremely rewarding. However, the improvement in the quality of life that these patients experience pales in comparison to the dramatic life transformation that my PCOS patients experience!

If you have PCOS or if the symptoms above sound familiar and you think you might have PCOS, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Hirsch for the cost of your Group Health Insurance Co-Pay. Insurance almost always also covers the necessary lab work and the return visit to review your case and to discuss results and recommendations. PCOS patients desiring treatment at Hirsch Clinic usually fall under the category of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Although Insurance will pay for some of the prescriptions and an occasional office visit, BHRT patients are billed $250.00 quarterly…a small price to pay for finally feeling “good” (often for the first time) and drastically reducing the risk for cancer and cardiovascular disease.
